Skyeline 12V Mini-Split RV AC: The Complete Guide

Skyeline 12V Mini-Split RV AC: The Complete Guide

Quick answer

The Skyeline is OutEquipPro's 12V DC mini-split air conditioner — a split system with a separate indoor blower and outdoor compressor, rather than a single rooftop box. It's the lineup's highest-capacity (12,500 BTU) and quietest (35 dB on low) unit, and it runs directly off your 12V battery like the rest of the range.

You'd choose it over a rooftop Summit 2 or Glacier Pro when you want a stealth build with no roof bump, want to keep your roof free for solar, or want to mount the heavy compressor low (rear of the van or under the chassis) instead of overhead. The trade-off is a more involved install — you route two refrigerant hoses and a signal cable between the indoor and outdoor units. It's cooling-only (no heat). Power-wise it's hungry: up to ~62A on Turbo, so it needs a 100A+ continuous BMS and a healthy LiFePO4 bank.

What the Skyeline is

Most RV air conditioners are rooftop units. A mini-split is different — it separates the job into two pieces:

  • Indoor unit: The blower/evaporator that lives inside the cabin and pushes cold air.
  • Outdoor unit: The compressor/condenser that lives outside and dumps the heat.

The two are joined by refrigerant hoses and a signal cable. This is the same architecture as the mini-split that heats and cools millions of homes — shrunk down and re-engineered to run on 12V DC straight from your house battery.

The Skyeline uses a variable-speed DC compressor, has dual condenser fans on the outdoor unit for strong heat rejection, and auto-swing louvers on the indoor unit for even distribution.

Note: The spec sheet calls the compressor "inverter scroll" — in plain terms that's a variable-speed DC compressor. It runs natively on 12V and does not need a DC-to-AC inverter.

Why choose a mini-split over a rooftop unit?

Choose the Skyeline mini-split if:

  • You want a stealth rig: No rooftop bump means it doesn't read as an "RV" from outside.
  • Your roof is crowded: Keeps your roof free for solar panels and vents.
  • You want the heavy stuff mounted low: The 52 lb outdoor unit can ride on the rear or under the chassis to improve the center of gravity.
  • You want the quietest option: At 35 dB on low, it is whisper-quiet inside.
  • You need the most cooling: At 12,500 BTU, it is our highest-capacity unit.

Choose a rooftop unit (Summit 2 / Glacier Pro) instead if:

  • You want the easiest install: It is a simple drop-in unit.
  • You want to maximize interior space: No wall-mounted blower unit.
  • You need heat: The Skyeline is cooling-only.

Installation: what's actually involved

A mini-split install is more involved than a rooftop drop-in. You must mount the indoor blower on a wall and the outdoor unit either vertically (e.g., on rear doors) or horizontally (e.g., under the chassis).

A word on under-mounting: Putting the unit under the vehicle is great for stealth, but it exposes the compressor to road debris, mud, water, and exhaust heat. If you go this route, protect it and keep it clear of the exhaust path.

The system ships pre-charged with R134a, so a clean install doesn't require an HVAC vacuum-and-charge if you don't exceed the supplied 10 ft line set.

Power and battery: plan for the draw

Because there is no startup surge, you size the system for continuous draw:

  • Turbo: ~62A
  • Eco: ~18–25A
  • Required: 100A continuous BMS, 6 AWG wiring, and LiFePO4 batteries.

Runtime Estimates (LiFePO4):

Battery Bank Turbo (~62A) Eco (~20A)
230Ah ~3.5 hours ~10–11.5 hours
460Ah ~7 hours ~20+ hours
630Ah ~10 hours ~30+ hours

FAQ

  • Is a mini-split better than a rooftop RV AC? Neither is universally better. A mini-split offers a stealth profile and free roof space at the cost of a more complex install.
  • Does the Skyeline have heat? No, it is cooling-only.
  • How far apart can the units be? The kit includes 10 ft hoses. An 18 ft component hose set is available if your layout requires more distance.
  • Is the Skyeline quiet? Yes, it is our quietest unit, as the compressor is located entirely outside.
